The Evolution of Italian Spritz:
A Historical Perspective
The concept of the Spritz has its roots in Italy, tracing back to the early 19th century when Austrian soldiers introduced a unique twist to local wines. To adapt to their tastes and the warmer Italian climate, these soldiers began adding splashes of seltzer water to the robust Italian wines.
This practice emerged as a way to make the wine more palatable, especially when compared to the lighter, cooler wines they were accustomed to in their colder homeland. This practice, called “spritzen” (German for “to splash”), gave birth to the Spritz as we know it.
